Why I Wrote Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession
Terence S. Phillips - Why I Wrote Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession
The Beginning of the Driftwood Cove Mystery Series
Stories often begin long before the first word is written.
For me, the idea behind Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession, the first installment of The Driftwood Cove Mystery Series, grew from a simple thought: What if a quiet harbor town held more secrets than anyone realized?
I have always loved stories that combine atmosphere, curiosity, and the slow unfolding of hidden truths. Cozy mysteries have a special charm because they allow readers to step into a world that feels warm and inviting—yet just beneath the surface, something mysterious is waiting to be discovered.
That contrast fascinated me.
A peaceful café.
A steaming cup of coffee.
A harbor town where everyone seems to know everyone else.
And yet… secrets linger in the shadows.
That idea became the foundation of Driftwood Cove.
The Birth of Driftwood Cove
When I began imagining Driftwood Cove, I pictured a coastal town that felt timeless.
A place where the harbor lights reflect off the water at night.
Where small cafés are filled with conversation and the smell of fresh coffee.
Where visitors come for peace—but sometimes leave with questions.
Driftwood Cove is meant to feel like a place readers can step into and explore. It’s cozy and welcoming, yet layered with intrigue. Every building, dock, and quiet street corner holds the potential for a story.
And at the center of it all is a simple idea that shaped the series:
Every cup of coffee might come with a clue.
That phrase became the guiding theme of Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession.
Why I Chose the Cozy Mystery Genre
Throughout my life I’ve been drawn to many different kinds of writing.
Some books teach practical skills.
Some inspire reflection and faith.
Some offer puzzles that challenge the mind.
But cozy mysteries offer something unique: they combine storytelling, curiosity, and atmosphere in a way that invites readers to slow down and think.
Instead of relying on shock or graphic drama, cozy mysteries build suspense through clues, characters, and clever twists.
Readers become part of the story.
They ask questions.
They connect the dots.
They try to solve the mystery before the final chapter.
That interactive feeling is one of the things I love most about writing in this genre.
The Inspiration Behind the Story
The inspiration for Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession came from a mix of imagination, atmosphere, and my appreciation for places where everyday life quietly intersects with mystery.
Think about how often important moments happen in ordinary settings.
A conversation overheard in a café.
An old letter discovered in a drawer.
A story someone never finished telling.
These kinds of moments can spark questions that lead to something much bigger.
That’s what happens in Driftwood Cove.
The story begins with something small—almost ordinary—but soon reveals that the past has a way of resurfacing in unexpected ways.
My Journey as an Author
Writing this book is also part of a larger journey for me as an author.
Over the years I’ve written across several genres, including:
Children’s stories
Puzzle and activity books
Inspirational writing
Educational resources
Faith-based reflections
Each project has allowed me to explore different ways stories and ideas can serve readers.
Some books entertain.
Some teach.
Some encourage.
But storytelling itself has always been at the heart of writing.
With Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession, I wanted to create a story that readers could enjoy purely for the experience—the setting, the characters, the mystery, and the journey of uncovering what really happened.
The Beginning of a Series
One of the most exciting parts of writing this book was realizing that Driftwood Cove has many stories to tell.
This first novel introduces the town and begins the unfolding of its secrets, but it is only the start.
Future books in the series will explore:
new mysteries
new characters
deeper connections within the town
and hidden stories waiting to be uncovered
Driftwood Cove is the kind of place where every new discovery leads to another question.
A Story Meant to Be Enjoyed
At its heart, Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession is meant to be a story readers can settle into with a warm drink and enjoy.
It’s a mystery, but it’s also a place.
A place where readers can step away from the noise of the world and spend time unraveling a puzzle in a harbor town filled with atmosphere and intrigue.
If the story leaves readers wondering what secrets Driftwood Cove still holds, then the book has done exactly what it was meant to do.
Thank You for Being Part of the Journey
Writing is always a journey of discovery—for the author as much as for the reader.
I’m grateful to everyone who takes the time to explore Driftwood Cove and experience the story of Steam, Secrets & a Sealed Confession.
And if you find yourself returning to the town again for the next mystery… well, that’s exactly what I was hoping for.
After all—
In Driftwood Cove, every cup of coffee may come with a clue.
